What a performance from the whole of the Cannstatt club. Everyone played their part in VfB finishing the 2025/26 Bundesliga season in fourth place and thus qualifying for the UEFA Champions League. After the 2-2 draw away to Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday 16 May, VfB board member for sport Fabian Wohlgemuth spoke about the concluding weeks of the league campaign and the crucial seven days still to come.
Fabian Wohlgemuth on…
… the successful end to the Bundesliga season: “The last few matchdays were absolutely spectacular and it was such an exciting end to the season. Despite the difficult run-in, we saw it through with complete focus and concentration – and that makes it feel so good. This is the third season in a row that we’ve qualified for Europe and the second consecutive Champions League campaign, which really is exceptional.”
… the reasons for the strong finish: “I was so impressed by the stability the team showed over long periods. Despite playing on three fronts for much of the season (Bundesliga, DFB Cup and UEFA Europa League), we had enough stamina at the end to see ourselves over the line. Getting the balance right between the various competitions is something that we managed better than last season, and a lot of praise for that has to go to our coach, our staff and our backroom team. Sebastian Hoeneß managed to make sure that the team was well prepared and solely focused on each individual match and always sent them out onto the pitch in good shape.”
… the DFB Cup final this coming Saturday: “This is a really special occasion and one that we’re really looking forward to. I am absolutely convinced that the team will be fired up for this final. We’ll use this week to train and prepare well. On paper, it’s pretty clear who the favourites will be, but for a cup final, it comes down to a few details on the day and if we rise to the occasion and give it everything we’ve got, I believe that we can all pull together once again and achieve something truly exceptional.”
