Match summary
The hosts had the first chance of the match with a counter in the third minute. Jean-Matteo Bahoya aimed a low shot towards the right corner from inside the penalty area, but Alexander Nübel prevented an early goal with a good reflex save.
At the other end, Chris Führich dribbled into the Eintracht box but couldn’t beat Michael Zetterer.
Opener from Chema
With 10 minutes gone, the almost 6,000 travelling VfB fans were soon celebrating the first goal after Chema was left unmarked at a corner and took advantage with a header from four metres.
After that, the crowd at Deutsche Bank Park saw an even contest, and VfB were thankful that Can Uzun (22’) and Ellyes Skhiri (28’) both missed the target for Frankfurt.
Nartey strikes
However, Sebastian Hoeneß’s side were more clinical and doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time, Nikolas Nartey finishing off a flowing move involving Führich and Deniz Undav.
Chance for Chema
In the 59th minute, Chema again got his head to a corner but Zetterer saved at close range this time. Nübel also had to be alert to stop Farès Chaibi’s effort.
Burkardt pulls one back
The Stuttgart shot-stopper then gave away a penalty in the 72nd minute, which Jonathan Burkardt converted to make it 2-1. Six minutes later, Burkardt came close to levelling the score but his volley narrowly missed the VfB goal.
In the fourth minute of added time, Eintracht were awarded their second penalty after the ball bounced against Chema’s hand in the area. Burkardt converted again to make it 2-2, but the point was enough to keep Stuttgart in fourth place and ensure Champions League qualification.
