Opening-day defeat

VfB went down 3-2 to SC Freiburg on the opening day of the Bundesliga season. Pellegrino Matarazzo’s men showed courage in battling back from a 3-0 deficit, but goals from Sasa Kalajdzic and Silas Wamangituka were not enough to earn a share of the points.

Team news

Mateo Klimowicz was back after injury and replaced Sasa Kalajdzic in the only change that coach Matarazzo made to the team that started the cup match away to Rostock.

Highlights
8th minute The worst possible start for VfB. A cross from the Freiburg right by Roland Sallai finds Nils Petersen unmarked in the heart of the VfB penalty area, and he heads home to make it 1-0.
15th minute So close to an equaliser for VfB. Gonzalo Castro goes down the right and feeds Silas Wamangituka, who slips it through the legs of goalkeeper Florian Müller, but Dominique Heintz is on hand to hook the ball away before it goes over the line.
26th minute Freiburg double their lead. A free-kick is drilled in from the right. Petersen is again on hand and though Gregor Kobel is able to parry his initial shot, Sallai follows up and the VfB keeper can do nothing to prevent the rebound finding the back of the net.
48th minute Robert Massimo is thwarted by Müller in the SCF goal and the visitors go straight up the other end and make it 3-0 as Lucas Höler centres and Vincenzo Grifo slots coolly home.
71st minute Daniel Didavi spots the run of substitute Kalajdzic, threads the ball through to him and the 23-year-old keeps his cool, chips the keeper and reduces the deficit.
81st minute A long ball from Wataru Endo is deflected by an opponent and falls kindly for Wamangituka, who fires home a left-footed shot at the near post to make it 3-2.
90th+5 minute Philipp Klement tries his luck from 20 metres out but Müller is able to dive and scramble the ball away around the foot of the post.

Marc Oliver Kempf:

It was our first match back in the Bundesliga and at times we were too passive. We need to build on this, learn from our mistakes and keep on giving it all that we’ve got.

Summary

Despite letting in three goals, VfB never allowed themselves to get away from their game plan. They refused to give up and dragged themselves back into the game in impressive fashion. The two goals from Kalajdzic and Wamangituka were unfortunately not enough for Matarazzo’s men to get any reward, and they were left ruing a number of missed chances both before and after the break.
