Courageous battle, no reward

In their final home game of the year, Hannes Wolf’s side put on a courageous battle display against Bayern Munich, eventually conceding in the 79th minute. A missed penalty deep in injury-time cost the Wasenelf a possible point.

As minutes after the final whistle, Chadrac Akolo, who stood dejected and bitterly disappointed in the penalty-area for some time, finally made his way towards the changing rooms, the VfB fans rose to greet the front-man with an encouraging round of applause. The striker had the chance to make it 1-1 from the penalty-spot with basically the last kick of the game, but failed to beat keeper Ulreich and earn VfB an equaliser, which would not have been undeserved considering the flow of the play throughout, in front of a crowd of 58,885 in the capacity-filled Mercedes-Benz Arena.

Personnel

Hannes Wolf made two changes to the eleven beaten 0-1 by TSG Hofffenheim in midweek. Anastasios Donis, who incurred a muscle sinew tear to the buttock region, was replaced by Simon Terodde from the outset, whilst Dennis Aogo got the nod ahead of Emiliano Insua.

Highlights
1st minute A chance right from the outset by Robert Lewandowski to open the scoring: Taking on a pass in the box, the striker turns with pace, beating Benjamin Pavard and getting a shot away. The ball fortunately goes the wrong side of the post and skims the outer-netting.
7th minute Taking on a wonderfully back-heeled pass from Simon Terodde, Chadrac Akolo gets a shot away from the edge of the box toward the right corners. Sven Ulreich is quick to react and fingertips the ball away for a corner.
36th minute An excellent stop by Ron-Robert Zieler keeps the score-line at 0-0. With VfB losing possession on the way forward, Corentin Tolisso breaks away on goal and places a shot, but Ron-Robert Zieler darts out a foot to prevent the visitors taking the lead.
79th minute Taking on a pass from Kingsley Coman in the box, the unmarked Thomas Müller, doesn’t need to be asked twice. The striker pulls the trigger from eleven meters to hand Bayern a 1-0 lead.
90th +4. minute VfB have the chance to make it 1-1 with the last kick of the game, but Sven Ulreich goes the right way and stops the penalty by Chadrac Akolo – And almost immediately the final whistle is blown.

Hannes Wolf:

What went on here today clearly mirrored the past few weeks for us. We were so close – but have nothing to show for that.

Summed-up

It could hardly have been more gutting! Throughout the home game against Bayern Munich, battled determinedly and put on a particularly strong defensive display over the distance. The visitors had few opportunities on goal and when they did find a way through, Ron-Robert Zieler showed some impressive form – although he could do nothing to prevent Thomas Müller from putting the visitors in front. VfB were close to snagging a deserved equaliser, and could levelled deep in injury-time, but were ultimately left disappointed and empty-handed.
