Personnel
VfB head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo opted for four changes to the team which began the match away to Wiesbaden last week. Clinton Mola made his first start (replacing Gonzalo Castro), Pascal Stenzel came in for Nathaniel Phillips, Holger Badstuber replaced Marc Oliver Kempf and Atakan Karazor began ahead of Silas Wamangituka.
7th minute | The hosts take the lead following a counter-attack, with Emmanuel Iyoha sending the ball inside the far post from a tight angle. |
45th minute | A foul on the edge of the opposition box results in Daniel Didavi being shown a second yellow card by referee Robert Schröder, and VfB find themselves down to ten men. |
59th minute | Nicolas Gonzalez scores from the spot to make it 1-1, calmly slotting the ball into the bottom left-hand corner. The penalty is the result of Ioannis Gelios going in late on Hamadi Al Ghaddioui and bringing the VfB substitute down in the six-yard box. |
78th minute | Another set-back for VfB. Gregor Kobel keeps out the original shot but Jannik Dehm is on hand to put away the rebound and make it 2-1 for the hosts. |
79th minute | Holstein Kiel look to have secured the points with a second goal in as many minutes. VfB lose the ball in the build-up and David Atanga feeds Lion Lauberbach, who prods home to make it 3-1. |
86th minute | Wataru Endo find Wamangituka in the inside-right slot, and the substitute halves the deficit with a delicate chip. |
Daniel Didavi:
In the first incident I was clearly fouled outside the penalty area but didn’t get a free-kick for it, and I wanted to get that point across to the referee. My foul was a clumsy one, but not necessarily worthy of a yellow. That said, I shouldn’t have gone in like that.
Summary
VfB had a miserable first half at the Holsteinstadion, shipping an early goal then having Didavi sent off just before half time. Matarazzo’s charges nevertheless managed to put this false start behind them and despite being a man down, got themselves an equaliser on the hour mark. Two mistakes in build-up play inside a minute then dashed all hopes of coming away from Kiel with any points. Substitute Wamangituka’s late goal to halve the deficit made for an exciting last few minutes, but it was ultimately too little, too late. After the defeat in the dying seconds a week ago away to Wiesbaden, this turned out to be another fruitless trip for VfB.
