Post-match quotes

After the 3-2 defeat away to Kiel, VfB players and coaches agreed that the two pairs of errors – the first just before half-time, the second ten minutes from the end – prevented VfB from collecting at least a point on their travels.

VfB head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo: "We started the match off well and created some chances to take the lead. Then the first shot our opponents had on goal after a counter-attack went into the back of the net. The second yellow card for Dida just before the break was obviously a key moment. Despite that, we gave it our all in the second half and we seemed to cope with the setbacks better than we had done in previous matches.

"The two mistakes that Robby made obviously hurt us, but we’ll stick by the lad and we’ll continue to show some trust in him. The team never gave up, carried on pressing forward and despite being two goals adrift and down to ten men, they still believed that we could claw it back. The lads really showed a lot of heart and gave it plenty. We can take a few positives out of today into the next match against Hamburg. It’ll be an absolutely crucial game and once again, we’ll give it everything we’ve got to come away with the win."

Pascal Stenzel: "Going behind early like that shouldn’t happen. After that, we reacted well but we weren’t consistent enough. Kiel had more space once we went down to ten men, but we showed fight and character to bring it back to 1-1. Towards the end though, we only had ourselves to blame."

Daniel Didavi: "In the first incident I was clearly fouled outside the penalty area but didn’t get a free-kick for it, and I wanted to get that point across to the referee. My foul was a clumsy one, but not necessarily worthy of a yellow. That said, I shouldn’t have gone in like that."
