Sebastian Hoeneß, Waldemar Anton and Deniz Undav spoke after the 3-2 defeat away to Bayer Leverkusen in the DFB Cup quarter-final.

VfB head coach Sebastian Hoeneß: “We’re really disappointed – we played such a good match. The lads put in the kind of performance that they can genuinely be proud of. It’s a bitter pill for us to swallow. Games of this high standard come down to the little details in the end, and we couldn’t quite get enough of them in our favour here tonight. We need to put it behind us as quickly as possible though and we can certainly hold our heads high as we make our way home.”

Waldemar Anton: “Letting in the winning goal in the last minute hurts so much. We had control of the match for certain periods and were able to play our own game. When you’re playing at such a high level, it’s the little things that make the difference and the result could have gone either way tonight. At the end of the day, we’re coming away empty-handed and that’s so annoying.”

Deniz Undav: “This was a good old-fashioned cup tie. If you get your noses in front against a top side like that, you really need to bring it home. We fought right to the final whistle but it wasn’t quite enough on the day. Going out of the cup certainly is a bad feeling, but now we can concentrate one hundred per cent on the Bundesliga. We need to dust ourselves down and get on with things.”
