Points shared in landmark game

VfB Stuttgart drew 1-1 against Werder Bremen in their 1,000th Bundesliga home match. Ermedin Demirovic cancelled out Jens Stage’s early goal.

Match summary

The two sides went toe to toe in the opening phase, with Bremen having a double chance for Senne Lynen and Jens Stage in the sixth minute. At the other end, Deniz Undav fired over from distance.

Behind early on

The visitors then took the lead in the 18th minute, when Stage found the left-hand corner with a low shot from 15 metres.

Sebastian Hoeneß’s side tried to find a quick response and had a good chance in the 22nd minute when Bilal El Khannouss met a cross with a powerful header, which Mio Backhaus turned behind.

Chances at both ends

Backhaus was called into action again just after the half-hour mark, saving a deflected free-kick from Maximilian Mittelstädt. Werder remained a threat on the counter, though, and missed good opportunities for Yukinari Sugawara (35’) and Jovan Milosevic (41’).

Just before half-time, Undav’s first-time shot from inside the area sailed just wide of the target, and VfB went into the dressing room a goal down.

Demirovic comes on and scores

VfB continued to press for an equaliser after the restart and had the first good attempt in the 51st minute with a shot from just outside the area from El Khannouss.

The home fans finally got to celebrate 10 minutes later, when El Khannouss teed up Ermedin Demirovic, who headed in the equaliser just minutes after coming on.

Scare for VfB

Hoeneß’s men were then lucky that Stage didn’t connect with the ball properly when he was free four metres in front of Alexander Nübel’s goal.

Stuttgart pushed for a winner until the end, but Backhaus saved substitute Badredine Bouanani’s dangerous free-kick as well as a header from Demirovic as it finished all square.
