Ten-man VfB defeated

Personnel

Skipper Gonzalo Castro and Konstantinos Mavropanos – who missed Wednesday’s defeat to VfL Wolfsburg through suspension – returned to the starting eleven against Julian Nagelsmann’s side, with Atakan Karazor and Mateo Klimowicz dropping to the bench. Seventeen-year-old Mohamed Sankoh, who has scored nine goals in 15 appearances for the Under-21s this season, was named in VfB’s first-team matchday squad for the first time.

Highlights
14th minute VfB midfielder Ahamada is shown the red card following a VAR review on a challenge between the 19-year-old and Leipzig’s Amadou Haidara. The visitors have to play the rest of the game with ten men.
45th minute +1 The first half ends goalless. VfB are fighting for every ball defensively but are lacking an outlet in attack, meaning they spent most of the first 45 minutes camped inside their own half.
46th minute Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side suffer another setback just 20 seconds into the second half. Dani Olmo’s cross from deep finds Haidara, who heads home to give Leipzig a 1-0 lead.
52nd minute The hosts go close again as Haidara tries his luck from inside the six-yard box, but VfB goalkeeper Gregor Kobel prevents his side from falling further behind.

67th minute Leipzig double their lead from the penalty spot following Mavropanos’ foul on Emil Forsberg. The Swede dusts himself down, steps up and beats Kobel to make it 2-0.
74th minute Sankoh, 17, replaces Sasa Kalajdzic for his first Bundesliga appearance.
90th minute +2 The final whistle goes. VfB slip to a 2-0 defeat.

Marc Oliver Kempf:

It was a difficult and intense game for us, and we’re physically exhausted as a result. We gave everything after going a man down and obviously would have liked to get at least a point.

Summary

VfB showed great character and fighting spirit following Ahamada’s early dismissal and went into half-time on level terms, but high-flying Leipzig proved too strong for the ten-man visitors in the second period.
