KARTEN
Personnel:
Markus Weinzierl was without several members of his squad for his first game as head coach of VfB. Daniel Didavi (Achilles tendon problem), Dennis Aogo (thigh muscle-sinew tear), Anastasios Donis (thigh muscle-bundle tear), Borna Sosa (pubic bone injury), Marc Oliver Kempf (thigh muscle-sinew tear) and Alexander Meyer (cruciate ligament tear) were all unavailable for selection. Compared to the Bundesliga game before the international break, Markus Weinzierl made four changes to the starting eleven - with Pablo Maffeo and Emiliano Insua filling the full-back positions, whilst Erik Thommy and Nicolás Gonzalez took attacking roles in the starting eleven. The quartet replaced Andreas Beck, Holger Badstuber, Daniel Didavi and Borna Sosa.
3rd minute | With 2 minutes and 14 seconds on the clock, the visitors take the lead: Following a lightening quick combination, the ball falls to Marco Reus in the VfB box. Benjamin Pavard gets a foot to the delivery but cannot clear and the ball duly finds Jadon Sancho, who immediately pulls the trigger. Particularly bitter for VfB - the shot is unstoppably deflected by Emiliano Insúa. |
8th minute | The first chance on goal for VfB: From a corner by Erik Thommy, Christian Gentner gets in a header, but BVB keeper Roman Bürki grasps the ball. |
23rd minute | The guests combine with pace through to the back-line, from where Lukasz Piszczek pulls his pass back into the path of the on-rushing Marco Reus, who slots home to make it 2-0 for BVB from twelve meters out. |
25th minute | A poorly played pass out from the back is intercepted by Borussia striker Paco Alcácer, who bears down on goal before deftly chipping over keeper Ron-Robert Zieler, to make it 3-0. |
48th minute | The second-half begins with a double-chance for VfB: First Nicolás Gonzalez gets his head to a cross from Timo Baumgartl, forcing Roman Bürki to turn the ball away for a corner. Dortmund struggle to clear the set-piece and the ball drops for Christian Gentner, who immediately fires on goal from from four meters out, but sends his shot over the crossbar. |
85th minute | With their first real shot on goal in the second period, the visitors make it 4-0. At the end of a quick break down the right, the ball finds half-time substitute Maximilian Philipp. The Dortmund striker exploits the space available and bursts through on goal, firing a low drive into the bottom corner from the edge of the area. |
Timo Baumgartl:
In the end, the win - including the score-line - was deserved. However, we shouldn't dismiss everything. Now we have a week in which to prefer for the TSG Hoffenheim game. We need to keep our heads up now.
Summed-up:
The visitors from Dortmund really displayed their true quality in the first half-hour - combining at pace and catching VfB cold three times. As the game progressed, BVB sat back on their comfortable lead and waited for the opportunity to hit on the break. VfB began to find their way into the tie and created several good openings during a period of pressure early in the second-half. Unfortunately though, coach Markus Weinzierl's men could not manage to pull a goal back.
