VfB come from behind to beat Hertha

Having fallen behind shortly before half-time at home to Hertha BSC, VfB Stuttgart were rewarded for their fighting spirit as they came back to win 2-1 thanks to a brace from Mario Gomez.

There were 89 minutes and 50 seconds on the clock when the majority of the 47,680 fans inside the Mercedes-Benz Arena rose to their feet to applaud the man of the match, Mario Gomez. The striker brought his side a deserved victory on Saturday afternoon with two goals. Although the result looked unlikely at one stage, VfB prevailed in the end thanks in particular to their strength of character and battling spirit.

Personnel

VfB head coach Markus Weinzierl made three changes to his starting XI following the 3-0 defeat at Borussia Mönchengladbach on Matchday 14. Santiago Ascacibar returned to the side after serving a one-match ban, while Gonzalo Castro and Chadrac Akolo were also recalled. The trio replaced Benjamin Pavard (muscle tear), Dennis Aogo (muscle stiffness) and Anastasios Donis, who dropped to the bench.

Highlights
38th minute The visitors from Berlin take the lead: after some quick interplay, Davie Selke fizzes a low cross from the right into the penalty area. Christian Gentner prevents Vedad Ibisevic from getting a shot away but the ball falls to Maximilian Mittelstädt, who pulls the trigger from close range. VfB goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler gets a hand to it but can’t keep the shot out.
64th minute VfB draw level! Minutes after coming on, Donis finds Nicolás Gonzalez on the left side of the penalty box with a smart cross-field ball. The 20-year-old heads the ball back into the middle where Gomez beats two defenders to head in the equaliser.
76th minute Gentner finds Gomez with a perfect a cross and the big man powers an unstoppable header past Rune Jarstein to make it 2-1.
92nd minute Hertha have a late chance to salvage a point when Selke receives the ball in a shooting position on the left side of the penalty area, but his shot misses the target. Two and a half minutes later, VfB celebrate their fourth win of the season.

Markus Weinzierl:

I congratulate my team and give them huge credit for the second half

Summary

Weinzierl’s men ultimately deserved to pick up their fourth victory of the season at home to Hertha. VfB gave very few chances away over the course of the match and showed tremendous fighting spirit in the second half, with Gomez scoring the all-important goals.
