Defeat at Gladbach

Markus Weinzierl's VfB Stuttgart side lost 3-0 at Borussia Mönchengladbach on Bundesliga Matchday 14, although were forced to play the closing stages with nine men.

Personnel

Santiago Ascacibar, who picked up a fifth booking of the season in last week's 1-0 home win against FC Augsburg, was suspended for the trip to Mönchengladbach; his Argentinian compatriot, Emiliano Insua, replaced him.

Highlights
7th minute While VfB mounted two promising early attacks into the Gladbach box, albeit without managing to fire off a real shot on either occasion, the first noteworthy chance of the game falls the way of the hosts, Ibrahima Traoré shooting from the left corner of the box from Thorgan Hazard's pass. The former VfB winger's effort – destined for the far corner – is saved well by Ron-Robert Zieler, however.
69th minute Only recently introduced from the bench, Florian Neuhaus and Raffael combine for Gladbach's opening goal. The midfielder makes his way into the box and tees up the Brazilian, who heads in from close range.
77th minute Traoré finds Hazard inside the box after a Gladbach attack down the right. The Belgian moves the ball quickly onto Neuhaus, who keeps his head and finishes calmly to double the lead.
84th minute There is a cruel ending to proceedings for Stuttgart. Lars Stindl crosses into the box from the left and as Benjamin Pavard attempts to clear, he unfortunately diverts the ball into his own net – injuring his thigh in the process. VfB have already made three changes and Erik Thommy has been sent off, so Weinzierl's troops end the game with nine men.

Ron-Robert Zieler:

After going behind, it was really difficult for us to come back. We need to deal with this setback and then from Monday focus on our home game against Hertha Berlin.

Summary

VfB lost 3-0, although the final score by no means reflects the balance of play. Weinzierl's side impressed for long periods and were solid at the back until just before the home side went ahead. Then, in the last 20 minutes, Gladbach took their chances clinically meaning VfB not only travel home without any points, but also nursing injuries to Dennis Aogo, Andreas Beck and Pavard.
