Away win at Nürnberg

Markus Weinzierl's VfB Stuttgart side claimed a deserved 2-0 victory at 1. FC Nürnberg, with Timo Baumgartl netting his first ever Bundesliga goal.

Personnel

Weinzierl made two changes to the team which lost 3-0 to Eintracht Frankfurt the previous week. Marc Oliver Kempf recovered from a thigh injury to make his Bundesliga debut for the club in place of Holger Badstuber with Andreas Beck also coming into defence for Erik Thommy.

Highlights
2nd minute The first chance of the game goes the way of the hosts. VfB fail to clear a free-kick and Nürnberg's Georg Margreitter heads wide.
39th minute The best opportunity of the first half falls VfB's way a few minutes before the break: Nicolás Gonzalez sprints down the left and crosses into the box for Mario Gomez, but the unmarked striker doesn't connect properly and misses the target.
68th minute VfB take a deserved lead having controlled the game thus far. Dennis Aogo delivers a corner into the Nürnberg box, where Robert Bauer clears. However, the ball lands at the feet of Baumgartl, who fires left-footed into the net for his first ever Bundesliga goal.
79th minute A nice pass from Gomez finds the run of Christian Gentner and the VfB captain strides into the box, only to be denied by Nürnberg keeper Christian Mathenia. The goalkeeper also parries the rebound.
82nd minute Another corner fizzes into the Nürnberg area and Mathenia palms it away. Thommy, only brought on four minutes earlier, wins it back on the edge of the box and hammers an unstoppable shot into the net to make it 2-0.

Markus Weinzierl :

We're relieved to have got an important victory. It was a deserved win. Today we can celebrate, but we've not achieved anything yet. There's still a long way to go.

Summary

VfB claim their first away victory of the season and deservedly so. Weinzierl's troops were solid throughout the 90 minutes, barely giving the hosts a sniff. In the second half the visitors continued to dominate and created a number of chances, two of which they converted to take home the three points.
