In front of a home crown of 55,096 in the Mercedes-Benz Arena on Saturday afternoon, VfB slipped to a 0-2 defeat to FC Schalke 04. The visitors struck early in the game and took their two-goal cushion into the break. In the second-half, Hannes Wolf’s men pushed in search of a way back into the tie, but in spite of creating some chances, they could not find the target.
Personnel
VfB head-coach Hannes Wolf had to make do without the services of Holger Badstuber, who was side-lined with an adductor injury. The gap in the defence was duly filled by Marcin Kaminski. In addition, Jacob Bruun Larsen made his debut in the jersey with the infamous red hoop on the right wing. Dzenis Burnic and Chadrac Akolo replaced Santiago Ascacibar and Anastasios Donis respectively in the starting eleven. Erik Thommy was in the VfB 18-man squad for the first time since signing for the club.
14th minute | The visitors take the lead from a dead-ball situation. A corner delivery from the right by Daniel Caligiuri found the advancing Naldo, who headed home to make it 1-0 for Schalke. |
19th minute | And a further setback for the Cannstatt Boys! Following a challenge between Jacob Bruun Larsen and Leon Goretzka, referee Felix Zwayer awards the guests a penalty, which Amine Harit converts to make it 2-0. |
35th minute | With the two-goal cushion, the visitors draw back ever more into the own half of the pitch and wait for the opportunity to hit on the break. VfB are enjoying more of the possession, but are unable to make it count. |
45th minute | The first clear chance for VfB on the stroke of half-time. Mario Gomez wins a corner, which is subsequently cleared off the line by the Schalke defence and the away side take their advantage into the break. |
47th minute | To start the second period, Hannes Wolf makes two changes, bringing in Daniel Ginczek and Anastasios Donis for Jacob Bruun Larsen and Berkay Özcan. The first chance of the half falls to VfB, with a miscued Marcin Kaminski header from a corner. |
51st minute | The Cannstatt Boys make the more active start to the second-half. Anastasios Donis lets fly from distance, but sends the ball well over the crossbar. |
59th minute | The next chance for VfB: Daniel Ginczek’s header on goal is ultimately turned over the crossbar by Schalke keeper Ralf Fährmann. |
65th minute | Space has opened up for the visitors from Gelsenkirchen to hit on the break. Amine Harit sets up Yevhen Konoplyanka, who wastes a golden opportunity – luck for VfB. |
76th minute | Marcin Kaminski delivers a cross, which Mario Gomez meets on the turn, but the striker cannot turn his shot on goal. |
90th minute +3 | It’s all over – there is no further incident in the closing phase. |
Christian Gentner:
We never had any real stability in our play and it was a bitterly disappointing afternoon for us.
Summed-up
Having gone 0-2 down early in the match, VfB did improve during the course of the second-half and Hannes Wolf’s men even managed to carve out the odd opening for themselves. However, on the day, the men in the shirts with the infamous red hoop could do nothing to endanger Schalke’s advantage.
