Initially, the away game looked to be going according to plan for the Wasenelf, who went 1-0 up thanks to Holger Badstuber. Ron-Robert Zieler made a strong save from Mainz’s first good chance on goal and the host’s presumed equaliser was cancelled out by the video-referee. However, the game then took a negative turn from the VfB view-point and defensive errors were duly punished.
Personnel
Hannes Wolf made two changes to the eleven that began in the clash with Hertha BSC. Holger Badstuber and Emiliano Insua, who were both second-half substitutes against the side from Berlin, this time got the nod from the outset, ahead of Marcin Kaminski and Chadrac Akolo. Marcin Kaminski took a place on the bench. Chadrac Akolo was removed from the squad at short-notice due to technical problems in relation to his playing licence.
4th minute | The first good chance of the game falls to the hosts. A cross from Abdou Diallo into the VfB area is chested down by Robin Quaison for Yoshinori Muto, who has only the keeper to beat, but Zieler manages to turn the effort away for a corner. |
16th minute | Once again Ron-Robert Zieler rescues his side from a set-back. A launched ball forward is chased down from the half-way line by Robin Quaison, who bears down on the VfB goal, but can find no way past Ron-Robert Zieler. |
19th minute | Just as earlier in the season, Holger Badstuber makes it 1-0 against Mainz. A free-kick delivered by Dennis Aogo causes confusion in the Mainz penalty-area. Holger Badstuber is quickest to react and turns the ball on goal. In attempting to clear, two FSV defenders hinder one another and the ball lands in the net. |
45’+2 minute | The equaliser just seconds before the break. On the edge of the box, Yoshinori Muto forced his way past Timo Baumgartl and fires from 18 meters out. Ron-Robert Zieler misjudges the flight of an ultimately miscued shot, which lands in the back of the net. |
54th minute | With his second goal of the day, Yoshinori Muto makes it 2-1for the hosts. The Japanese attacker takes on a pass into the VfB area from Gerrit Holtmann and shoots on goal. The initial shot is parried by Ron-Robert Zieler, but the Mainz striker reacts quickest to poke the loose ball home. |
64th minute | Gerrit Holtmann nets a less than perfectly executed shot, to make it 3-1 for FSV. Ron-Robert Zieler gets a hand to the ball but can’t prevent the hosts increasing their advantage. |
90’+1 minute | In added time, a cross from Christian Gentner finds Daniel Ginczek, who heads home from five meters out to reduce the VfB deficit to 2-3. It was to remain the final goal-mouth incident in the match. |
Hannes Wolf::
We are disappointed. That was probably our worst game of the season so far here today.
Summed-up
Hannes Wolf’s men never managed to take real advantage of their early lead and ultimately lacked the necessary penetrative power on the attack. At the back, the Cannstatt Boys never really looked comfortable throughout, which Mainz capitalised on to secure a not undeserved home victory.
