Stuttgart’s efforts in vain

The decisive moment came just before half-time as Bremen quickly took a free-kick, which allowed Max Kruse to score the only goal of the game. Stuttgart pressed hard for an equaliser in the second period but couldn’t find a way through, just lacking the finishing touch. The defeat means VfB remain without a win on the road this season.

Team news

Hannes Wolf stuck with the same eleven that drew in Hannover a week earlier. Fit-again trio Anastasios Donis, Chadrac Akolo and Marcin Kaminski earned places on the bench.

Highlights
29th minute "Takuma Asano wins the ball following a misplaced pass from Bremen goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka, but Maximilian Eggestein's last-ditch challenge ensures the Japanese forward's effort rolls wide."
45th minute The opening 45 minutes are evenly contested in the most part, with both defences standing strong. However, on the stroke of half-time Fin Bartels quickly takes a Bremen free-kick, allowing Max Kruse to finish and put the hosts 1-0 in front. A setback for Stuttgart, who had otherwise barely been threatened.
52nd minute A scare for Stuttgart as Bartels puts the ball in the net again for Bremen, but the Video Assistant Referee chalks the goal off for offside. 1-0 it remains.
64th minute Great chance for VfB to make it 1-1 as Berkay Özcan wins the ball and plays in Josip Brekalo, but the Croatian’s effort is cleared following some desperate Bremen defending.
88th minute Close! Holger Badstuber climbs in the opposing penalty area but his header narrowly clears the crossbar. Stuttgart are throwing the everything at their opponents!
90th minute +4 In added time even goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler heads forward in search of a late leveller, but the visitors are unable to find a goal and the final score is 1-0 to Bremen.

Hannes Wolf:

Of course we’re disappointed with the result. We played well in the first half, controlled the game and had a great chance with Takuma Asano.

Summary

VfB remain without a victory away from home this season, narrowly losing out in a hard-fought encounter in which chances were at a premium. After going behind against the run of play, the visitors created several decent opportunities in the second half but ultimately lacked the precision to find an equaliser – not for want of trying.
