Personnel
All eyes were on the man making his final appearance for VfB – Mario Gomez. The 34-year-old made his professional debut for the Cannstatt boys back in 2004, and the Darmstadt match saw him hit the 230-appearance mark for the club. He came into the side up front in place of Sasa Kalajdzic, while Marcin Kaminski replaced the injured Marc Oliver Kempf (separated shoulder), with Pascal Stenzel taking on the captain’s armband for the afternoon.
33rd minute | The away team make the most of a set piece to take the lead. A Fabian Schnellhardt free-kick from midfield finds Serdar Dursun, whose acrobatic overhead kick makes it 1-0 to Darmstadt. |
40th minute | Darko Churlinov replaces the injured Nicolas Gonzalez. |
42nd minute | Churlinov wins the ball and pushes forward before picking out Silas Wamangituka on the right flank. The Kinshasa-born forward sends an inch-perfect pass through to Gomez who stabs it home for the equaliser – his seventh goal of the season. |
53rd minute | Darmstadt’s Matthias Bader drills home from the edge of the area to restore the visitors’ lead. |
62nd minute | Again Wamangituka feeds Gomez and again the ball ends up in the back of the net, but the former is adjudged to have been offside in the build-up and the goal does not stand. |
82nd minute | A special moment at the Mercedes-Benz Arena as Gomez leaves the field for the final time in a Stuttgart jersey, to applause from the VfB coaching and backroom staff and of course his teammates. |
87th minute | Tobias Kempe fires home for Darmstadt to make it 3-1, and that will be the final scoreline. |
Pellegrino Matarazzo:
I’m proud of the lads. We had a lot of ups and downs during the second half of the season but we always managed to pick ourselves back up again. Everyone believed that we could achieve our goal and I think that this was a decisive factor. It was great for Mario to get another goal in his final match.
Summary
VfB are back in the Bundesliga, despite a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Darmstadt, with Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side fulfilling the club’s ambitions over the course of a successful season. The main focus this afternoon was on Gomez, the 34-year-old striker bidding farewell to Stuttgart and even managing to sign off with a goal.
