VfB Stuttgart took all three points once again in their third game since the end of the winter break. The side in the shirts with the infamous red hoop carved out a 2-1 (1-0) win at the Mercedes-Benz Arena against in form SV Sandhausen. Over the course of the ninety minutes, Hannes Wolf’s men had the bulk of the possession and took a deserved lead into the half-time break. In the second-half, VfB initially failed to put the tie beyond the visitors and duly conceded an equaliser. In the end though, the ultimate determination of Christian Gentner & Co. Won through against a dogged opponent and the Cannstatt Boys stole away all three points with a late winner.
Personnel
For the clash with the side from the Hardtwald region, Hannes Wolf sent out the same eleven that began against Fortuna Düsseldorf on Monday night. There was one change made to the 18-man squad, with the injured Benjamin Pavard (slight ankle problem) being replaced by Florian Klein.
13th minute | A shot which was to have an effect: Julian Green lets fly from 18 meters out following a corner, but Sandhausen’s defender Daniel Gordon put his head to in order to clear for a corner – the force of the shot sending the centre-half crashing to the floor. It was a characteristic scene for the first-half: VfB constantly pressing forward against a very well organised guest defence, who did well to stem the Stuttgart flow. |
45th minute | By the end of the first half, neither side really produced a clear chance on goal, but then Carlos Mané launched the final attack before the break. The Portuguese winger dribbled into the Sanhausen box and was felled by Leart Paqarada. Referee René Rohde made no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Simon Terodde took on the responsibility and fired home confidently to make it 1-0 – the striker’s thirteenth goal of the campaign, having opened his account for the season in the 2-1 win over SVS when the sides last met. Hannes Wolf’s men were rewarded late on in the half for their efforts against a very defensively disciplined opponent. |
47th minute | The next chance for the Cannstatt Boys shortly after the re-start, with Julian Green firing wide of the target from 20 meters out. |
61st minute | Guest trainer Kenan Kocack makes a shrewd move in introducing Richard Sukuta-Pasu to replace Manuel Stiefler. The former German junior international is just second on the pitch as he puts his side back on level terms. |
68th minute | VfB quickly recover from the setback and break on the right wing. The delivery by Carlos Mané is met by Kevin Großkreutz, who can only hit the crossbar. |
85th minute | GOOOAAAAALLL for VfB – and a stunner too! Simon Terrode flashes a flying volley into the back of the net – 2-1. |
90th minute + 3 | The visitors push again in search of a late equaliser but VfB defend solidly and claim three very important points in their bid to win promotion. |
Simon Terodde:
We showed great determination today and we can really enjoy this important win.
Summed-up
It was a tough afternoon’s work for VfB against SV Sandhausen on Sunday. The visitors were very well-drilled and defensively extremely disciplined, making it very difficult for Hannes Wolf’s men to create chances up front. In the end, it was massive effort and determination which saw the Wasenelf snatch three very important points.
