Dan-Axel Zagadou extends VfB contract

The 27-year-old has fought his way back after a lengthy injury lay-off, and has now penned a new deal that ties him to the club until 30 June 2027.

Dan-Axel Zagadou is staying at VfB Stuttgart. The 27-year-old defender, who has been with the club since 2022, has committed his future to the Cannstatt side by putting pen to paper on a new deal until 30 June 2027.

Through hard work and perseverance, Zagadou has fought his way back into the first-team fold after a lengthy injury lay-off. He made his comeback on Matchday 31 of the 2025/26 campaign, when VfB drew 1-1 at home with SV Werder Bremen.

Fabian Wohlgemuth, VfB’s board member for sport: “Daxo’s footballing skills make him a valuable asset to our defence, and his personality makes him an important member of our squad. We’re looking forward to our future together.”

Zagadou: “I’m very grateful for the trust the VfB management has placed in me. I’ll do everything in my power to perform at my best for the coaching staff, the club and the fans next season. Let’s get to work and be successful together!”

From the relegation play-off to the UEFA Champions League

Zagadou has made 53 appearances since joining VfB from Borussia Dortmund in September 2022, registering two goals and two assists. The centre-back, who is affectionately known as ‘Daxo’ by his colleagues, helped the club finish runners-up in the Bundesliga and qualify for the UEFA Champions League in 2023/24.

He missed the majority of the 2024/25 season through injury but returned to the matchday squad in a 3-2 victory at RB Leipzig on Matchday 34 of the campaign. He made eight appearances in all competitions in 2025/26 as VfB secured a Champions League spot once again.
