Deniz Undav confirmed as new VfB captain

The 30-year-old succeeds Atakan Karazor, who has held the position in the last two seasons.

VfB Stuttgart have a new captain. Head coach Sebastian Hoeneß has named Deniz Undav as the new team captain, with the forward succeeding Atakan Karazor, who has worn the armband for the last two seasons. Undav will therefore lead the team out in the Bundesliga opener at FC Bayern München on Friday evening (28 August, 20:30 CEST).

“Deniz is an experienced player, who’s already carried a lot of responsibility, is always in close contact with the coaching staff and the players, and also enjoys a high standing,” explained Hoeneß. “He’s a key player on the pitch and has been instrumental to our success. ‘Ata’ [Atakan Karazor] has likewise been an absolutely worthy captain over the last two seasons and will always be remembered as the one who lifted the DFB Cup in 2025.”

Deniz Undav:

I will wear the captain’s armband with pride.

Undav, who becomes the club’s 24th Bundesliga skipper since the league was founded in 1963, said: “Stuttgart and VfB have become a second home for me and my family. Being captain of this club, with its rich history and incredible fans, is a great honour. I will wear the captain’s armband with pride. And if I manage to do it nearly as well as Ata has done over the last few years, then I will have probably done a lot right.”
