Top-four showdown

Goal difference is all that separates VfB and RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga table ahead of their meeting on Sunday. Head coach Sebastian Hoeneß has clear expectations of the game.

Fixtures between VfB and RB Leipzig have typically been goal-filled, intensive and nail-biting spectacles – and everything points towards the match-up on Sunday 15 Match being no different (kick-off 19:30 CET).

The teams are level on 47 points going into the Bundesliga Matchday 26 encounter, with fourth-placed VfB only ahead of Leipzig in fifth on goal difference: the boys from Cannstatt have scored two more than their opponents this weekend.

Head coach Sebastian Hoeneß has clear expectations of his charges going into the game. “On Sunday we need to give everything and be 100 percent ready,” said the 43-year-old. “Against a direct rival in the table, we need full power again – both on the pitch and in the stands.”

VfB have only lost one of their 12 Bundesliga home matches this season – a defeat against Bayern Munich in December 2025. Hoeneß’s charges have had to overcome numerous obstacles at the MHP Arena this term – and that is likely to be the case once more against Leipzig.

Hoeneß: “Leipzig play with a great deal of intensity”

Both teams like to play on the front foot, with VfB the fourth-highest scorers in the Bundesliga in 2025/26 (50 goals), just ahead of fifth-placed Leipzig (48). Furthermore, Ole Werner’s side have taken the second-highest total of shots (403), ahead of VfB in third (377) and only behind Bayern (472).

As such, Hoeneß is obviously wary of Sunday’s visitors: “Leipzig play with a great deal of intensity, with a clear philosophy and they also have a lot of individual quality.” All of which points to another spectacle in store at the MHP Arena.
