Hello Alex, you and your team-mates got involved in the community at the Vesperkirche last week. How did you enjoy the day?
Alex: “It was special to be able to bring joy to people. I was taking part for the first time. We were able to help give local people in difficult circumstances a little relief for a while. Generally speaking, I think it’s great that VfB are getting involved in social initiatives in the region.”
Your team spirit is just as impressive as your charitable efforts. Is that one of the factors behind your good recent form?
Alex: “Our team spirit is very good and strong. There’s an ambitious spirit in the squad. We currently have a healthy balance of harmony and competition, not to mention fun and focus. After all, we want to be successful and win games together.”
What else is behind VfB’s impressive displays in the Bundesliga, UEFA Europa League and DFB Cup this season?
Alex: “First of all, we have a lot of players who are fit and available at the moment. Competition for places is fierce and training levels are correspondingly high. That helps bring the best out of every player and enables them to keep developing and to perform at a high level. As a team, we’ve also overcome one or two hurdles and managed to swing a few tight games in our favour, which has boosted our confidence. Every player in our squad has the chance to get on the pitch and plays an important role, which further strengthens the dynamic in the group.”
Spells at various clubs have helped you reach 40 appearances in European competition. What is so special about VfB’s continental journey?
Alex: “Playing on the European stage is one of the greatest experiences in football. Champions League and Europa League nights are very special, not only for us as players but for the fans and the entire club. It’s clear that every European game VfB are involved in creates a special buzz. Excitement levels are always huge. By performing well, we want to ensure we get to enjoy a few more European nights this season.”
Your next match is against RB Leipzig – one of your direct rivals in the table. What kind of game are you expecting?
Alex: “Leipzig are a strong team. In general, our games against them are always very intense and I’m expecting another end-to-end encounter. Leipzig have their sights set on the Champions League places, while we want to consolidate our [top-four] position. With the help of our fans, we want to make sure we get a good result.”
