Top-class tackling

No fewer than four VfB players are currently among the best tacklers in the Bundesliga. No other team boasts as many players in the top 10 as the Cannstatt club.

VfB win an impressive 54 percent of their tackles per 90 minutes, well above the league average. Whether defensive or offensive, Sebastian Hoeneß’s men collectively embrace the duels, support and push each other. With 29 matchdays gone of the season, there are four players in particular who stand out with their tackling stats and rank among the best 10 in the Bundesliga. VfB are the only one of the 18 clubs in the German top flight to have more than one player represented in the top 10 for tackle success.

Defender Ramon Hendriks:

I want to win every tackle and defend the ball.

Hendriks top of the pile: “Want to win every tackle”

The leader in this ranking also wears the red hoop on his chest: Ramon Hendriks has won 69.2 percent of all the challenges he’s contested, the current best in the Bundesliga. “I want to win every tackle and defend the ball,” the defender said in a recent interview, adding: “As well as that I’m fairly quick, I can cover a lot of space and help the team in that way.“

His central defensive partner Jeff Chabot is in fourth place at the moment. The 28-year-old, who’s also had spells in the Netherlands, Italy and at 1. FC Köln, has won 65.3 percent of his duels. Immediately behind him is Maximilian Mittelstädt in fifth place with a success rate of 64.8 percent. Captain Atakan Karazor also features in the top 10 – at eighth in the ranking, he’s come out on top in 64.6 percent of tackles.
