One last time: “Nübel, Nübel, Nübel!”

After three successful seasons on loan, Alexander Nübel’s time at VfB has come to an end.

When fans chant a goalkeeper’s name from the stands it says a lot about how highly he is regarded - and Alexander Nübel regularly heard his name ring out over the last three years. Whenever he made a save to deny the opposition, VfB fans would passionately cry: “Nübel, Nübel, Nübel!”

129 VfB outings

The custodian has been in Cannstatt on loan from Bayern Munich since summer 2023, and showed a strong sense of commitment and dedication to the club and its fans from day one. In 2023/24, Nübel and his teammates finished as Bundesliga runners-up and thereby qualified for the UEFA Champions League, while in the following campaign they won the DFB Cup. In the recently ended 2025/26 campaign, Nübel and Co. earned a Champions League spot once again, as well as reaching the DFB Cup final for a second consecutive year. In total, Nübel made 129 competitive appearances for VfB.

Thank you, Alex!

Farewell words from Fabian Wohlgemuth and Nübel

Fabian Wohlgemuth, board member for sport at VfB: “Alexander Nübel has set standards over the last three years, both on and off the pitch, and at both a sporting and personal level. Alex could always be relied upon, and VfB’s positive development, culminating in a third successive year of European football, owes a great deal to him. Alex has our heartfelt thanks for our time together and for his commitment to VfB, and we wish him nothing but the best for the future, both professionally and personally.”

Alexander Nübel on his departure: “I had a sensational time at VfB Stuttgart in every respect. My family and I had three wonderful years in Stuttgart, and I felt right at home from day one. The team and the fans showed me so much appreciation and respect, which I’m very grateful for. It was a very successful time on the pitch too: We qualified for Europe on three occasions, experienced unforgettable evenings in the Champions League and Europa League, and celebrated a very special moment with the DFB Cup victory - one that I will remember forever.”

Developed into full Germany international at VfB

Nübel became a senior Germany international during his time at VfB. He made his debut on 11 October 2024 in a 2-1 UEFA Nations League win against Bosnia and Herzegovina, and has been called up regularly ever since, earning two further caps. Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann included Nübel in his 2026 World Cup squad when he announced it on Thursday 21 May.

Thank you, Alex, and all the best for the future!
