The amazing 2023/24 season: how it all unfolded

The win over Borussia Mönchengladbach which sealed second spot in the league brought to an end an incredibly successful season. Time to take a look back and enjoy the highlights of the campaign…

VfB kick off their season with a 5-0 win over Bochum. For the first time since Matchday 1 of the 2021/22 campaign (and a 5-1 win against Fürth), VfB find themselves top of the table.

2 September 2023, Matchday 3:

VfB also win their second home game 5-0, this time against Freiburg. The last time that VfB had six points from their first three matches was in 2008/09. Serhou Guirassy becomes the second VfB player since Karl Allgöwer to have scored five goals after just three Bundesliga matches.

7 October 2023, Matchday 7:

In the 3-1 win over Wolfsburg, Guirassy scores VfB’s first hat-trick since Matchday 23 of the 2009/10 season (Cacau in a 5-1 victory against 1. FC Köln).

21 October 2023, Matchday 8:

With seven wins in their first eight matches, VfB sit proudly on 21 points – their biggest haul ever at this stage of a season. Guirassy has 14 goals during that period – the best start to a season of any striker since the Bundesliga was founded.

28 October 2023, Matchday 9:

VfB fall 3-2 to Hoffenheim – the first and to date only Bundesliga home defeat under Sebastian Hoeneß.

20 December 2023, Matchday 16:

A 3-0 win at home to Augsburg propels VfB back up to third in the table, and the lads from Cannstatt  will never be out of the top three from this point onwards.

27 January 2024, Matchday 19:

VfB enjoy their first-ever Bundesliga win over Leipzig, with Deniz Undav getting his maiden hat-trick for the club in a 5-2 victory.

3 February 2024, Matchday 20:

16 March 2024, Matchday 26:

For the first time since March 2012, VfB defeat Hoffenheim away in the Bundesliga. Thousands of fans make the journey and turn it into a virtual home game as VfB run out 3-0 winners.

31 March 2024, Matchday 27:

After the 3-3 draw with Heidenheim, Guirassy and Undav have 38 goals between them, breaking the club record of 37 set by Jürgen Klinsmann and Karl Allgöwer in the 1985/86 season.

6 April 2024, Matchday 28:

A 1-0 win in Dortmund makes it five away victories in a row for VfB – another club record.

13 April 2024, Matchday 29:

VfB stretch their unbeaten run to 11 matches. With five games still to play, the 3-0 home win over Frankfurt means that VfB are guaranteed at least a Europa League spot for the following season. Guirassy is on 25 goals already, overtaking Mario Gomez’s 24 in a season in 2006/07 and making him the club’s record goal-scorer in a single campaign.

27 April 2024, Matchday 31:

The trio of Guirassy (25 goals), Undav (18) and Chris Führich (eight) crack the half-century mark and sit on 51 goals between them after the 2-2 draw away to Leverkusen.
