Gladbach preparations under way

Several hundred spectators watched on with interest as Nico Willig led training with the VfB first team on Tuesday.

It was the second open session in three days since Willig took over as interim coach. Preparations for the visit of Borussia Mönchengladbach are now in full swing ahead of this Saturday’s meeting at the Mercedes-Benz Arena, which kicks off at 18:30 CEST.

Following the bank holiday, Willig continued the work he began on Easter Sunday, holding individual conversations with several players. With the exception of captain Christian Gentner, who continued to work individually with fitness coach Martin Franz following his calf strain, the whole VfB first-team squad took part in training. They were joined on the pitch by Luca Mack from the Under-19 side.

“We all need to do everything we can to get the fans back on our side,” said Gonzalo Castro ahead of a tough assignment against fifth-placed Gladbach on Saturday. “We want to and need to go about the game in an attacking manner, but we can’t leave ourselves exposed either.”
