Fabian Wohlgemuth extends VfB deal

VfB Stuttgart have extended Fabian Wohlgemuth’s contract until 2029. The 47-year-old board member for sport has been with the Cannstatt club since December 2022.

VfB Stuttgart 1893 AG and Fabian Wohlgemuth are set to continue their successful partnership after the club’s supervisory board extended the contract of the 47-year-old board member for sport until 30 June 2029. Wohlgemuth is not only responsible for first-team affairs at the Cannstatt side, but also the women’s team and the club’s youth academy.

Dietmar Allgaier, VfB president and supervisory board chairman, said: “Since joining VfB Stuttgart, Fabian Wohlgemuth has provided the club with a clear direction and philosophy on the pitch. Alongside CEO Alexander Wehrle and the entire sporting department, he has succeeded in shaping a completely new sporting and financial profile for VfB Stuttgart in a very short period of time.

“That profile is underpinned by successful and attractive football – not only in our first team, who are led by Sebastian Hoeneß and his coaching staff, but in the youth academy and the women’s team too. That is what VfB should continue to stand for in the future. We’re really looking forward to continuing our work together.”

Wohlgemuth added: “I’d like to thank the supervisory board, led by Dietmar Allgaier, for their faith and support. We have a clear vision of where we want to go, but we also know that implementing a good idea requires determination, patience and perseverance. We need maximum effort and commitment from everyone involved. I’m looking forward to continuing to play my part in the future.”

Wohlgemuth joined VfB as sporting director in December 2022 before becoming the club’s board member for sport ahead of the 2024/25 campaign. With Wohlgemuth, Wehrle and Hoeneß at the helm, VfB preserved their Bundesliga status with victory in the relegation play-offs in 2023 before finishing runners-up in the top flight the following season.

After winning the DFB Cup for the fourth time in 2025, VfB ended the 2025/26 Bundesliga campaign in fourth spot, thereby earning a place in the UEFA Champions League for the second time in three seasons. They also reached the DFB Cup final again, but lost out to Bayern Munich in Berlin. The first-team squad has grown stronger every year, with VfB continuing to generate transfer revenue while tying down key first-team players on new contracts.

VfB Women are appearing in the Bundesliga for the first time in 2026/27, while the men’s Under-21s are in their third successive season at third-tier level. The Under-17s were recently crowned German champions, with the Under-19s winning the DFB Junior Cup.
