Sebastian Hoeneß’s side dictated proceedings from the off at the MHP Arena and pinned Maccabi back into their own half, although it took them a while to break down the Israeli visitors’ rearguard.

Assignon breaks deadlock

Then in the 25^th minute, Maximilian Mittelstädt delivered a perfect cross from the left into the box, where Lorenz Assignon volleyed the ball into the net from nine metres. Deniz Undav missed the chance to double the lead just after the hour mark.

Tomas makes it 2-0

The second goal did arrive soon after, though. Angelo Stiller passed to Undav on the edge of the box and the Stuttgart striker squared it to Tiago Tomas, who hammered the ball into the roof of the net from seven metres.

Mittelstädt on the spot

Not long after the restart, referee Marian Barbu awarded a penalty for a handball by Heitor, which Mittelstädt put away to make it 3-0. Moments later, VfB were hit on the counter and Roy Revivo pulled a goal back for Tel Aviv. Stuttgart were almost punished for some poor defending from a counter again seven minutes later, but thankfully Dor Peretz missed the target. In the 72^nd minute, Alexander Nübel was called into action to deny Revivo.

Vagnoman seals it

In virtually the last action of the match, substitutes Badredine Bouanani and Josha Vagnoman combined, with the latter heading in from close range to complete the 4-1 victory.

25th minute: After a pinpoint left-wing cross from Mittelstädt, Assignon takes the ball on the volley and thumps it into the net for the opener.

37th minute: Stiller feeds Undav in the penalty area and he squares the ball to Tomas, who makes it 2-0 from seven metres.

50th minute: Mittelstädt makes no mistake with the penalty, firing into the right corner.

52nd minute: VfB concede on the counter as Revivo shrugs off Lazar Jovanovic and beats Nübel one-on-one.

94th minute: Having just come on, Vagnoman heads Bouanani’s cross over the line from four metres.
