Match summary
Sebastian Hoeneß’s side began the cup final with very high intensity and pressed Bayern high as they enjoyed the better start in front of the crowd of 75,000 at the Olympiastadion.
Mittelstädt with two chances
VfB fashioned the first opening in the ninth minute, when Deniz Undav teed up Maximilian Mittelstädt in the penalty area, but his shot from a tight angle crashed into the side netting. Mittelstädt had the next attempt after 17 minutes with a long-range effort towards the bottom right corner, which Jonas Urbig was at full stretch to save.
Nübel denies Stanisic
As the game went on, Bayern began to get a foothold and had their first threatening opportunity in the 37th minute, but Alexander Nübel was equal to Josip Stanisic’s powerful long-distance shot. After a close-fought 45 minutes, the first half finished goalless.
Kane breaks deadlock
Ten minutes into the second half, the VfB defence were caught out by a quickly taken free-kick and Michael Olise was able to cross to Harry Kane, who was in too much space in the middle and powered a header past the helpless Nübel. Six minutes later, Stuttgart were fortunate not to be two down after Konrad Laimer missed the empty goal from a rebound.
Chance for Chema
VfB kept battling and had a chance to equalise in the 76th minute, when Chema headed just wide of the target from a good Chris Führich cross.
Kane seals it
With 80 minutes gone, Kane initially hammered the ball against the upright but seconds later, the Englishman received the ball back from Luis Diaz in the penalty area and netted the decisive second goal.
Kane was then given the opportunity to complete his hat-trick in stoppage time after a cross into the box hit Angelo Stiller on the hand, and he beat Nübel from the spot to make it 3-0.
Goals
55th minute: Olise’s cross from the right finds Kane in too much space and he leaves Nübel no chance with a header from close range.
80th minute: Diaz squares to Kane in the penalty area and the Bayern striker finds the bottom right corner to double the lead.
92nd minute: Kane scores his and Bayern’s third goal with a penalty.
