VfB through to quarter-finals

VfB Stuttgart earned a deserved 2-0 win over VfL Bochum in the last 16 of the DFB Cup, going through thanks to an own goal and an effort from Deniz Undav.

Match summary

The Bundesliga 2 side had the first opportunity of the match when Kjell Wätjen received a pass from Cajetan Lenz and got past Lorenz Assignon before smashing an effort at goal from a tight angle, only to see Jeff Chabot block it with his head (7’).

VfB edge in front

Sebastian Hoeneß’s charges took the lead in the 12th minute when Philipp Strompf inadvertently flicked a long throw-in from Ramon Hendriks past Timo Horn and into his own net. VfB were very much the better team after that, although Bochum retained a constant threat on the break as they sat deep inside their own half.

Chance for Leweling

Stuttgart could have extended their lead in the 22nd minute when Bilal El Khannouss’s clever pass found Jamie Leweling, but his shot from 11 metres out was well saved by Bochum’s goalkeeper. VfB rode their luck a touch after that, with the home side unable to make the most of their chances on the counter.

Strompf sent off

Shortly before the interval, Strompf was shown the red card following a foul on Deniz Undav, giving VfB a goal and man advantage at the break.

Undav on target

Undav scored VfB’s decisive second goal early in the second half when he applied the finishing touch with his head to a cross from Leweling (47’). Hoeneß’s men made the most of their numerical advantage to remain in complete control, forcing Bochum to chase after the ball as they saw the result to the final whistle.

The draw for the quarter-finals takes place on Sunday 7 December at 19:15 CET.
