DFB Cup winners!

A 4-2 win over Arminia Bielefeld gave VfB Stuttgart their fourth DFB Cup title following successes in 1954, 1958 and 1997.

Match summary

The third-division outfit began the final in confident mood and could have taken the lead in the 11th minute, only for Noah Sarenren Bazee to strike the crossbar from the edge of the six-yard box.

Woltemade hits the opener

Sebastian Hoeneß’s side showed them how it was done a few moments later when they punished a mistake in midfield, with Angelo Stiller threading a pass through to Nick Woltemade, who coolly finished with just the goalkeeper to beat (15’).

No let-up

VfB dominated thereafter and took full advantage of another Bielefeld error in the 22nd minute when Deniz Undav sprinted through on goal and teed up Enzo Millot for a tap-in. It was 3-0 just before the half-hour mark as Undav finished from another fine Stiller pass (28’), paving the way for victory.

Missed chances

VfB had two golden opportunities to put the game to bed early in the second half but neither Woltemade (47’) nor Undav (54’) were able to find the net again. Bielefeld tried to battle their way back into the game, but Hoeneß’s side remained in firm control until the closing stages.

Millot makes it 4-0, Bielefeld respond

Stiller continued to pull the strings in midfield and when Millot pounced on another defensive mistake to make it 4-0 in the 66th minute, there seemed little doubt as to the outcome of the game. However, Julian Kania pulled one back for Bielefeld in the 81st minute, while a Josha Vagnoman own goal four minutes later made for a tense finale. Nübel made a fine save to deny Lukas Kunze in stoppage time (90’+3), with the final whistle heralding wild celebrations among the VfB players, staff and fans.

Goals

15th minute: Mael Corboz plays the ball straight to Stiller, who sends Woltemade through with a first-time pass. The forward brilliantly rolls his marker Stefano Russo and buries the ball into the net.

22nd minute: Bielefeld duo Sam Schreck and Marius Wörl get in each other’s way following a corner for their side, and the ball falls to Millot. The midfielder quickly feeds it to Undav, who sprints into the box and returns the pass to Millot for a simple finish from close range.

28th minute: Maximilian Großer loses the ball to Stiller, who releases Undav with another quick pass. The forward takes on his marker and places the ball low into the bottom left-hand corner.

66th minute: Bielefeld lose the ball again as they try to build in their own half. Millot glides into the penalty area and curls a shot into the bottom left-hand corner.

81st minute: VfB’s defence is all over the place, allowing Kania to flick in Christopher Lannert’s right-wing cross from close range.

85th minute: Vagnoman tries to head the ball back to Nübel but instead finds the bottom corner of his own net.
