VfB reach DFB Cup last 16

VfB Stuttgart booked their place in the DFB Cup round of 16 thanks to a 1-0 home victory over 1. FC Union Berlin.

Sebastian Hoeneß’ charges saw plenty of the ball in the opening exchanges against their deep-lying visitors, but were fortunate that Aissa Laidouni’s long-range strike in the 28th minute only hit the crossbar.

Undav on target

VfB hit the woodwork themselves just five minutes later through Deniz Undav, who did eventually opening the scoring on the stroke of half-time when he finished from close range following a save by Frederik Rönnow (45’).

VfB defend their lead

The second half soon developed into a typical cup battle. Union increasingly went on the front foot, although they never seriously troubled Alexander Nübel in the VfB goal. The boys from Cannstatt created chances for Jamie Leweling (53’) and Silas (82’), but were unable to make the most of them. It was ultimately of little consequence though, as VfB held on to their narrow but deserved victory.

Goal

45th minute: Rönnow saves an effort from Leweling but the rebound falls at the feet of Undav, who prods in for the only goal of the game.

Reaction

Sebastian Hoeneß: “I thought we were good in the first half. Union were compact and defended with passion, but we were in control. It was great to score just before half-time. The game changed in the second half. It increasingly turned into a battle in which the only thing that mattered was getting to the next round. We fought well and we’re happy to be in the last 16.”
