Team news
VfB had new recruit Waldemar Anton in the starting line-up for their first competitive match of the 2020/21 season. Roberto Massimo was also back to full fitness after his ankle injury and joined Anton in the starting XI, but Borna Sosa had to be left out of the squad due to a knee problem, while Pascal Stenzel did not make the trip to Rostock either after the birth of his child.
9th minute | VfB start the stronger of the two teams, with Orel Mangala setting up Silas Wamangituka in the first minute, but his shot is blocked. The match then becomes more evenly contested. Manuel Farrona-Pulido has the first attempt on goal for the hosts from the edge of the area on the right-hand side, but his shot finds the side netting at the near post. |
23rd minute | Gonzalo Castro feeds Mangala and the Belgian’s shot from just outside the area is tipped around the right-hand post by Hansa keeper Markus Kolke at full stretch. |
42nd minute | VfB take the lead! Daniel Didavi’s shot from just outside the box hits the inside of the right-hand post and Wamangituka is there to side-foot home the rebound into the empty net. |
62nd minute | VfB seem to have the match under control but suddenly the home team are nearly level. A poor back-pass is picked up by Rostock’s John Verhoek, who finds himself one-on-one with Gregor Kobel, but the VfB goalie parries the ball around the post for a corner. |
67th minute | Soon after, VfB have a chance to make it 2-0. A fine series of passes sets up substitute Darko Churlinov with an opportunity to shoot from inside the area, but Kolke is equal to it. |
90th minute +3 | The closing stages of the match end up as a gritty battle, with VfB seeing off wave after wave of Rostock attacks as the home team push everyone forward. The final whistle eventually comes, however, and the lads from Cannstatt go home with a 1-0 win under their belts. |
Gonzalo Castro:
In the first half we did really well, but after the break we needed to put the match to bed earlier – and we had some great chances to do that between the 65th and the 70th minute. We can take a lot of confidence out of the game for the start of our league campaign, though.
Summary
VfB are through to the second round of the DFB Cup after a well-deserved victory. They controlled much of the proceedings and in the first half in particular, they created the better chances, with Rostock having to feed off scraps.
