Match summary
VfB made a lively start, pushing Atleti deep into their own half, and had two clear chances inside the first 60 seconds. After a pass from Deniz Undav, Bilal El Khannouss was denied by Jan Oblak, who also foiled a dangerous long-range effort from Josha Vagnoman from the resulting corner.
The Slovenian goalkeeper was called into action again in the 11th minute, saving Angelo Stiller’s shot from the edge of the box.
Deadlock broken by Leweling
Stuttgart continued to dominate and took a deserved lead in the 36th minute through Jamie Leweling’s long-range strike into the corner.
The visitors then had their first opportunity in the 42nd minute with a header from David Hancko, but Dennis Seimen, on his Champions League debut, saved it comfortably to keep the score at 1-0 going into half-time.
Alvarez equalises
With less than two minutes gone in the second period, Ademola Lookman set up Julian Alvarez with a ball into the penalty area and the Atleti striker took his chance to make it 1-1.
Hjulmand sent off
The Spanish side were growing into the game and Seimen had to react well to stop Pablo Barrios giving them the lead on the hour mark. Their momentum was halted, however, when midfielder Morten Hjulmand was shown a red card three minutes later for a dangerous foul on Angelo Stiller.
Chance for Chabot
With a man advantage, Sebastian Hoeneß’ side regained control of the game and came closest to a winner in the 81st minute when Jeff Chabot headed just wide from a corner, but the match would ultimately finish 1-1.
Goals
36th minute – 1-0: Leweling puts VfB in front with a low shot from the edge of the box which nestles in the left corner.
47th minute – 1-1: Alvarez fires into the Stuttgart net from 10 metres from Lookman’s delivery.
Head coach Sebastian Hoeneß:
Ultimately the only thing lacking against a top European team was the winning goal – that shows how good our performance was.
Reaction:
Head coach Sebastian Hoeneß: “We can be proud of the performance – and yet we’re also slightly disappointed at the moment because we could’ve got a bit more. The first half was excellent: closing down Atletico early, winning balls, creating chances and giving little away. The lead was fully deserved and could’ve even been greater. Then the match was level again 90 seconds after the restart. The build-up to the equaliser was not good from our point of view. Ultimately the only thing lacking against a top European team was the winning goal – that shows how good our performance was.”
Goalkeeper Dennis Seimen: “We could’ve got a bit more out of it – especially given the first half, which clearly belonged to us. In the second half, Atletico – even with a man down – used all their class and experience. I’m pleased about my debut in the Champions League. Atletico are great opponents for such a debut, but it’s even nicer for me that I got to experience this moment at home in our stadium in front of this magnificent atmosphere.”
