Vital win in Paderborn

VfB Stuttgart earned a 2-0 win at SC Paderborn on Bundesliga Matchday 5 thanks to goals from Jeff Chabot and Chris Führich.

Match summary

Sebastian Hoeneß’ charges pressed the promoted side with fierce intensity from the outset and created their first chance after five minutes, when Deniz Undav’s vicious shot from distance was well saved by goalkeeper Nahuel Noll.

Chabot heads home

The breakthrough came in the 25th minute when Jeff Chabot met a looping cross from Angelo Stiller to head in from close range. Jamie Leweling almost added to the scoreline a short while later but his shot from ten metres out struck the base of the left-hand post (30’).

Seimen prevents the equaliser

Shortly before the interval, Raphael Obermair got the better of Josha Vagnoman inside the VfB box, but Dennis Seimen made a fine save from close range to preserve the visitors’ lead.

Stuttgart were too passive early in the second half, allowing the hosts to grow into the game. Indeed, VfB rode their luck in the 59th minute when Marvin Pieringer headed wide from three metres out.

Führich decisive

In the pouring rain, a fiercely contested encounter unfolded, with the newly promoted side enjoying the better of the play. In the 81st minute, substitute Dzenan Pejcinovic missed the chance to put the result beyond doubt with a long-range effort, while at the other end, Finn Jeltsch cleared Rayan Philippe’s shot off the line. Führich then put the game to bed in the 83rd minute, brilliantly converting Stiller’s pass to seal a 2-0 victory.

Matchday 5: SC Paderborn 07 – VfB

Goals

25th minute – 0-1: Chabot beats his marker to connect with Stiller’s cross to the back post and head the ball in from close range.

83rd minute – 0-2: Führich smashes a shot from 12 metres in off the underside of the crossbar.

Notable mention

Goalkeeper Seimen made his starting Bundesliga debut in this game.

Head coach Sebastian Hoeneß:

We’re happy with the result and delighted to have picked up all three points.

Head coach Sebastian Hoeneß: “We’re happy with the result and delighted to have picked up all three points. We started the game well, had plenty of control and created a few chances. After taking the lead, we gave the ball away too cheaply on several occasions and had to do a lot of defending at times, which kept the game open. We need to make better decisions in the final third. Above all, I want to praise the entire team for their defensive performance.”

Goalkeeper Dennis Seimen: “I shed a few tears after the final whistle. To make my Bundesliga debut in Paderborn of all places is one of the most emotional moments I’ve experienced in my career so far. Paderborn have made life difficult for every team they’ve faced this season, and today was no different. But we managed to come out on top thanks to the quality we have in our team.”
