Chance for Tomas

Tiago Tomas had VfB’s first chance in the 17^th minute with a bicycle kick from Angelo Stiller’s cross, which Marvin Schwäbe tipped over the bar.

Demirovic strikes

With Stuttgart growing into the game, they were awarded a penalty in the 28^th minute after a foul by Schwäbe on Ermedin Demirovic. The striker picked himself up to take the spot-kick and level the score at 1-1, which is how it stayed until half-time.

Tomas with back-heel

Sebastian Hoeneß’s side came out of the blocks well after the break and had the first chance of the second half in the 52^nd minute. Again Tomas met a Stiller cross with a skilful finish, but his back-heel narrowly missed the target. Demirovic (67’) and Tomas, whose shot hit the post (70’), had further opportunities.

At the other end, Alexander Nübel made a strong save from Said El Mala’s long-distance shot and substitute Maximilian Mittelstädt blocked a Kaminski chance on the line.

Vagnoman nets winner

In the 81^st minute, Stiller played a perfect pass into the box for Vagnoman, who clinched victory for VfB with the winning goal. Köln pressed forward in the closing stages but the visitors preserved their slender lead.
