Three late goals cost three points

Match summary:

Head coach Sebastian Hoeneß made three changes for the meeting with Baden-Württemberg rivals Freiburg. New signings Badredine Bouanani (for the injured Deniz Undav) and Bilal El-Khannouss (for Tiago Tomas) both went straight into the starting line-up, while Jeff Chabot returned in place of Ramon Hendriks at the back.

After taking the lead, VfB sat back and invited pressure from the hosts, but chances were few and far between at both ends and didn’t alter the 1-0 scoreline at half-time.

Late onslaught

Freiburg became increasingly threatening in attack during the final half hour of the match and equalised with around 10 minutes left through substitute Igor Matanovic. It got worse for VfB as just five minutes later, as the home side were celebrating again when Derry Scherhant completed the turnaround. Matanovic struck again in stoppage time to seal the three points for Freiburg. 

Goals:

0-1 – 20^th minute: Jamie Leweling’s cross finds its way to Ermedin Demirovic in the centre of the penalty area. With his back to goal, he scores in sensational style with a backheel.

1-1 – 81^st minute: Freiburg’s Lukas Kübler advances down the right flank and whips the ball to the edge of the box, from where Matanovic shoots first time into the far corner.

2-1 – 86^th minute: The hosts attack down the right side again. Johan Manzambi runs into the middle and finds the unmarked Scherhant, who nets at the second attempt.

3-1 – 90’+1^st minute: Finn Jeltsch upends Manzambi in the box and Matanovic buries the penalty into the bottom right corner.
