Match summary
Sebastian Hoeneß’s side dominated from the off at a sold-out MHP Arena and pushed Dortmund back deep inside their own half. Chris Führich had the first sight of goal in the 13th minute, but Gregor Kobel was equal to it.
Chance for Undav
Dortmund, lining up in a 5-3-2 formation, tried to stay compact but were powerless to prevent VfB hogging over 70 percent of possession in the first half. Deniz Undav escaped the clutches of marker Daniel Svensson after half an hour, but he fired over from the edge of the six-yard box.
Intense VfB pressure
Yet despite Stuttgart’s persistent attacks, they struggled to carve out clear-cut openings. Führich had another attempt from 14 metres out that fizzed narrowly over the bar, leaving the game scoreless at the interval after an impressive first half from the home side.
Kobel thwarts Assignon
VfB had the first opportunity in the second period as well. Lorenz Assignon was given space to shoot from around 13 metres out, but BVB goalkeeper Kobel was able to save. Hoeneß’s men kept their foot on the pedal though, and remained the better team as they produced a high-intensity performance.
Stoppage-time shock
The hosts were left stunned in the 94th minute when the ball landed at the feet of substitute Karim Adeyemi inside the penalty area following a counter-attack, and he applied the finishing touch to put Dortmund 1-0 up.
VfB threw everything forward in search of an equaliser but conceded a decisive second goal through Julian Brandt to make the final score 2-0.
Goals
94th minute: Jeff Chabot’s attempted clearance from a BVB cross lands at the feet of Adeyemi, who places a right-footed effort into the bottom-right corner.
95th minute: Fabio Silva gets forward on the break and crosses into the box for Brandt to smash the ball into the net from close range.
