Match summary
It was a perfect first half from Sebastian Hoeneß’s side, who put pressure on their opponents from the start with varied attacking play. After early chances for Deniz Undav (3’) and Nikolas Nartey (7’), which were both saved by Finn Dahmen, the Augsburg goalkeeper was beaten for the first time in the 12th minute.
Undav with opener
Chris Führich got away down the left and laid the ball off to Angelo Stiller, whose cross was turned in by Undav to give VfB an early lead. Augsburg had little response to Stuttgart’s powerful attacking play, which Hoeneß’s men ruthlessly exploited.
Quickfire double
In the 29th minute, Nartey teed up Tiago Tomas with a backheel in the penalty box and the Portuguese made it 2-0 from 11 metres. Just two minutes later, Nartey scored himself, flicking Maximilian Mittelstädt’s delivery into the hosts’ net.
Augsburg pull one back – Undav replies
Augsburg upped their tempo in the second half and reduced the deficit through Fabian Rieder in the 57th minute. However, any hopes of a comeback were quickly snuffed out by Undav, who made it 4-1 just a minute later.
Another goal each
The hosts didn’t give up, though, and pulled a goal back again in the 72nd minute through substitute Anton Kade. But when Ermedin Demirovic made it 5-2 just after coming on, it was game over.
Goals
12th minute: It’s good play on the left wing from Führich, who rolls the ball into Stiller in the penalty area. His cross finds its way through to Undav to finish off.
29th minute: Nartey lays the ball off to Tiago Tomas, who fires in from 11 metres to make it 2-0.
31st minute: Mittelstädt drives the ball into the penalty area and Nartey steers it into the Augsburg net for 3-0.
57th minute: Finn Jeltsch blocks two shots from Alexis Claude-Maurice in the box. The second rebound lands with Rieder, who strikes into the right corner with his left foot.
58th minute: Dahmen saves Führich’s effort but only pushes it out to Undav, who nets his second goal from five metres.
72nd minute: Dimitrios Giannoulis’ cross from the left finds Kristijan Jakic, whose attempt is smothered at close range by Alexander Nübel, but Kade is quickest to the rebound and makes it 4-2.
83rd minute: A mistake in the FCA defence lets in Undav and he unselfishly cuts the ball back to substitute Demirovic, who wraps up the 5-2 win.
