Head coach Sebastian Hoeneß: “It was a wild game. We started really well and we played the way we wanted to for 20 to 25 minutes, and created some good chances. Mainz started winning a lot of second balls after that, they implemented their game plan and got their reward from a set piece. We started the second half well with a good energy, but we gave the ball away too many times. The two goals put us in front and it felt like the game had swung our way. We kept it at 2-1 for a long time, which makes their late equaliser all the more frustrating. On the whole it’s a fair result.”
Alexander Nübel: “After we turned the game around, I had a very good feeling that we would go on to get all three points. Ultimately it just wasn’t enough in the end. It was a frustrating way to end the game. But if you look at it as a whole, it’s not a completely undeserved result. We’ll analyse the match and then focus on our home fixture against FC Porto.”
Ermedin Demirovic: “Given the way the game panned out, we’ll take the point. We’re in good form, we came from behind in Mainz, we fought and turned it around, but Mainz also had good chances. It hurts to have thrown the win away at the end but both teams had their moments. We need to keep working, keep grafting away to achieve our aims and stay focused. We’ve got a lot of really exciting weeks coming up.”
