Match summary
VfB seized control of the game right from the off, dominating possession and forcing the Wolves back deep into their own half. The lively Chris Führich went close to scoring in the 14th minute, only to see his low drive towards the bottom-right corner saved by Kamil Grabara.
Undav scores
Just six minutes later, however, VfB fans lifted the roof at the MHP Arena. Führich drilled a low cross into the box from the left that ricocheted off Konstantinos Koulierakis and Ermedin Demirovic before landing at the feet of Deniz Undav, who opened the scoring from close range with his 50th competitive goal for VfB.
Leweling at the double
Sebastian Hoeneß’s side kept their foot on the gas and doubled their advantage on the half-hour mark. A blistering counter-attack culminated in another low Führich cross from the left, this time finding Jamie Leweling to tap home from inside the six-yard box.
Leweling found the target again just before the interval, arrowing a first-time effort into the net from 14 metres out.
Nartey adds gloss
VfB went into game-management mode in the second half, protecting their lead while maintaining complete control of the match, which was Hoeneß’s 100th Bundesliga fixture for the club. Nikolas Nartey added the icing on the cake in stoppage time when he finished off a counter-attack to make the final score 4-0 (90’+5).
Goals
21st minute: Führich crosses into the box from the left. The ball bounces off Koulierakis and Demirovic and sits up kindly for Undav, who smashes in from close range.
30th minute: Another clever Führich cross from the left, which is this time finished by Leweling, arriving at the back post.
42nd minute: Leweling fires the ball into the top corner to put VfB 3-0 up.
95th minute: VfB charge forward on the break and Tiago Tomas slides the ball into the path of Nartey, whose shot from inside the box is deflected into the net.
