Match summary
Perfect start
Sebastian Hoeneß’s side took the lead after just five minutes when Chris Führich robbed Jan Schöppner to bear down on goal before coolly slotting the ball into the bottom right-hand corner from 12 metres out.
Heidenheim equalise
The hosts pulled level in the 20th minute, though. Christian Joe Conteh’s pass into the box found the unmarked Eren Dinkci at the back post, and he rifled an unstoppable shot into the top-left corner from 11 metres. Home goalkeeper Diant Ramaj was called into action a short while later, producing a fine save to keep out Führich’s long-range drive (27’).
Turnaround
Heidenheim edged in front in the 34th minute after Maximilian Mittelstädt gave away a penalty for a foul on Dinkci, which Arjon Ibrahimovic converted to make it 2-1. As such, Ermedin Demirovic’s goal, scored moments earlier and which would have put VfB 2-1 in front, was disallowed, giving the match an entirely different complexion.
Penalty for Stuttgart
Mittelstädt made amends shortly before the interval with a penalty of his own to level the score at 2-2 after Chema had been fouled (44’).
Heidenheim had the first chance of the second half but Alex Nübel made a fine save to thwart Ibrahimovic (50’). At the other end of the pitch, Mittelstädt’s shot narrowly fizzed the wrong side of the right-hand post (53’).
Conteh on target, Undav replies
VfB dominated much of the second half, but it was nevertheless Heidenheim who scored again, this time through Sirlod Conteh (82’). However, Deniz Undav had the last word with a late equaliser in the 88th minute.
