“An afternoon to forget”

Head coach Sebastian Hoeneß, Atakan Karazor and Ermedin Demirovic take stock of the 2-1 defeat away to St. Pauli.

Head coach Sebastian Hoeneß: “Congratulations to St. Pauli. It was an afternoon to forget for us. We didn’t get going today. We were too sloppy at times and occasionally gave the ball away too cheaply. You could sense that it would be an open game today. We had our moments and chances, but gave away the opening goal far too easily. After the break we came out well, but then went 2-0 down from a penalty, which of course made it extremely difficult. At the end of the day, we have to acknowledge that overall St. Pauli deserved to win today.”

Atakan Karazor: “We had high hopes for this game, but we weren’t always able to implement our plan out on the pitch. We kept trying in the second half, but unfortunately we only managed to pull a goal back late on, otherwise we could definitely have got another one. The result is frustrating and it hurts.”

Ermedin Demirovic: “We didn’t get the basics right a lot of the time today. We lost the ball too often in our build-up play, and St. Pauli managed to take the sting out of our game at times. It’s a frustrating result, especially because we came here in good form and with a lot of motivation, having worked hard for our progress in recent weeks. Now we have to keep going with real conviction and show that this defeat was just a blip.”
