Match summary
It was a fiercely contested, intense match right from the outset at the sold-out Millerntor-Stadion on Saturday.
Chance for Führich
Chris Führich had the first opportunity of the match when he found himself with just the goalkeeper to beat following a fine Maximilian Mittelstädt pass, but Nikola Vasilj produced an excellent reflex save to keep out his close-range shot from a tight angle.
St. Pauli take the lead
Sebastian Hoeneß’s men enjoyed plenty of possession but found it tough to create any further clear-cut openings. The hosts were a constant threat on the break and took the lead in the 35th minute when Arkadiusz Pyrka cut in from the left and passed inside towards Danel Sinani, whose dummy allowed the unmarked Manolis Saliakas to rifle an unstoppable shot into the top right-hand corner from the edge of the area.
St. Pauli with the rub of the green
The hosts were fortunate in the 50th minute when Adam Dzwigala’s attempted clearance struck his own post. Lady Luck was on their side again five minutes later when the ball bounced off Führich’s hand, giving Pauli a penalty that Sinani confidently converted to make it 2-0.
Undav fires over
Stuttgart subsequently increased the tempo and could have pulled a goal back shortly before the hour-mark, only for Deniz Undav to see his dink from 15 metres go over the goalkeeper and over the bar (59’). VfB had plenty of the ball after that but laboured to make an impact in the final third.
Leweling with the consolation
In the closing stages, Alexander Nübel thwarted Martijn Kaars following a counter (83’) and a long-range Sinani effort (86’), before Jamie Leweling reduced the deficit in the final minute with a low drive from the edge of the box. That was as good as it got from Hoeneß’s men, however, leaving them to return home from Hamburg nursing a 2-1 defeat.
