Heavy home defeat

VfB were on an even footing against Bayern for much of the match but lacked a cutting edge in what was ultimately a 5-0 loss.

Match summary

Bayern started strongly but the first chance of the game fell to VfB in the ninth minute when Maximilian Mittelstädt’s shot from inside the box flew just wide of the post.

Early setback

Bayern had the ball in the net just two minutes later when Michael Olise’s low cross was flicked in by Konrad Laimer with his heel. Sebastian Hoeneß’s men responded well, though, and continued to push forward.

Chance for Nartey

Nikolas Nartey hit the side netting a short while later (17’), and he thought he had equalised just before half-time, only for his effort to be ruled out for offside by VAR.

Alex Nübel kept VfB in the game at the MHP Arena with a fine save to deny Nicolas Jackson, before Chema had a big chance to equalise from close to the penalty spot but he was unable to hit the target. As such, Bayern took a 1-0 lead into the interval.

Lorenz Assignon sent off

The boys from Cannstatt kept the tempo high at the start of the second half but were unable to make the most of their chances. Bayern were far more clinical with their opportunities and soon pulled away from their hosts.

Harry Kane came off the bench on the hour-mark and scored a hat-trick (66’, 82’, 88’), while fellow substitute Josip Stanisic was also on the scoresheet (78’). Bayern’s fourth goal was particularly frustrating from a VfB perspective as the visitors were awarded a penalty for Lorenz Assignon blocking a shot on the line with his hand, leading to the defender being sent off. Bayern scored once more after that to seal a 5-0 victory.
