Match summary
Seven changes
VfB head coach Sebastian Hoeneß opted to rotate his starting line-up in the wake of the 4-0 UEFA Europa League victory over Go Ahead Eagles on Thursday. Ameen Al-Dakhil, Pascal Stenzel, Chema, Nikolas Nartey, Josha Vagnoman, Chris Führich and Badredine Bouanani came in for Finn Jeltsch, Lorenz Assignon, Atakan Karazor, Angelo Stiller, Maximilian Mittelstädt, Jamie Leweling and Deniz Undav.
Hamburg take the lead
Bouanani had the first chance of the game in the sixth minute but missed the target from close range. Luck was on VfB’s side just three minutes later when Robert Glatzel’s deflected shot only grazed the crossbar.
The HSV forward was more accurate a short while later though, as the home side got forward on the counter. Alexander Rössing-Lelesiit threaded a pass through to Glatzel, who rifled the ball into the bottom-right corner from 13 metres out (17’). VfB struggled to produce a response in the remainder of the half and went into the break 1-0 down.
Undav equalises
Hoeneß brought on Jamie Leweling at the start of the second half, and VfB immediately put the home side under pressure in a bid to level the scores. They did so in the 54th minute when Undav, who came on for Führich in the 40th minute, finished from close range to make it 1-1.
Stuttgart continued to dominate at the Volksparkstadion, and Undav almost added a second but could only hit the side netting from a tight angle on the break (80’).
Extra man
After Hamburg attacker Rössing-Lelesiit was sent off for a second yellow card (82’), VfB pressed forward in search of a late winner. However, it was the home side who landed the knockout blow in stoppage time, with Fabio Vieira finishing off a swift counter-attack.
Goals
17th minute: Rössing-Lelesiit dribbles his way through the VfB midfield. Jeff Chabot can’t cut out his pass to Glatzel, leaving the forward in space to drill in the opening goal from 13 metres.
54th minute: Hamburg’s goalkeeper spills Leweling’s long-range shot into the path of Undav, who buries the equaliser from close range.
90th+4 minute: HSV speed forward on the break, culminating in Baldé passing to Vieira, who stuns VfB with the late winner.
