Sebastian Hoeneß’ men enjoyed the better start at Signal Iduna Park but were unable to translate their dominance into clear-cut chances. Tiago Tomas went closest in those opening exchanges, narrowly firing wide after a fine Jamie Leweling cross (19’).
Penalty for Dortmund
It was, however, the home side that took the lead when Deniz Undav fouled Nico Schlotterbeck inside the box. Emre Can confidently converted the ensuing penalty to put Dortmund in front (34’), changing the flow of the game.
Beier doubles the advantage
Worse was to come from a Stuttgart perspective just before the interval. Alexander Nübel did well to save Serhou Guirassy’s shot on the turn but Maximilian Beier was first to the rebound to bundle the ball in from close range at the second attempt – following another excellent save by Nübel – and give the hosts a 2-0 half-time lead.
Undav reduces the deficit
Shortly after the interval, Undav pulled a goal back: standing with his back to goal, he hooked in a looping header from Bilal El Khannouss (47’). The Germany striker then equalised in the 71st minute when Maximilian Mittelstädt flicked on Angelo Stiller’s corner, finding Undav, who poked in from close range.
Wild finale
When Dortmund edged in front again through Karim Adeyemi in the 89th minute, a home victory appeared to be on the cards. Undav had the final say, however, completing his hat-trick with a fine shot on the turn from a superb Chris Führich run to earn a deserved point from a 3-3 draw.
Goals
34th minute: Can makes no mistake from the penalty spot, leaving Nübel no chance.
41st minute: Guirassy’s left-footed shot is saved by Nübel, but Beier eventually prods the rebound over the line.
47th minute: El Khannouss’ header comes to Undav, who hooks in an eye-catching effort to make it 2-1.
71st minute: Mittelstädt flicks the ball on to Undav at a corner and he makes no mistake from close range.
89th minute: A Dortmund counter-attack culminates in Beier squaring the ball to Adeyemi inside the box, and his shot goes through Nübel’s legs to put BVB 3-2 up.
90th +1 minute: Führich drives in from the left and finds Undav, whose shot on the turn beats Gregor Kobel as it squeezes into bottom corner.
