Match summary:
The 7,500 travelling VfB fans made their presence felt right from the off in Munich as they watched a fiercely contested encounter. Serge Gnabry curled an effort wide for the hosts in just the third minute, with Deniz Undav missing the target at the opposite end of the pitch just moments later following a corner. Sebastian Hoeneß’s men defended resolutely against an in-form Bayern team across the first half, leaving the game goalless at the break.
There were no changes from VfB at half-time, and they rode their luck in the 49th minute when the unmarked Harry Kane just failed to connect with Gnabry’s cross. The visitors had their best chance of the game five minutes later when a ball from the left by Jamie Leweling arrived at the feet of Josha Vagnoman, who fired over from 13 metres.
Kane showed him how it was done in the 57th minute with a long-distance effort. He added a second moments later and completed his hat-trick in the 80th minute, with Kingsley Coman rounding out the scoring shortly before the final whistle.
VfB, who struggled to build on their strong first-half showing, returned home nursing a 4-0 defeat inflicted by the Bundesliga leaders.
Goals
57th minute 1-0: Kane drives in the opener from 25 metres out, his effort beating Alexander Nübel on its way into the bottom left-hand corner.
61st minute 2-0: VfB struggle to deal with a cross from Gnabry. Thomas Müller back-heels the ball to Kane, who makes it 2-0 from close range.
80th minute 3-0: Joao Palhinha’s shot from distance is blocked but falls into the path of Kane, who applies a left-footed finish.
89th minute 4-0: Müller tees up Coman, who adds Bayern’s fourth shortly before full time.
