Away win on final day of the season

VfB Stuttgart produced an impressive display to earn a 3-2 win at RB Leipzig on Saturday.

Match summary

Sebastian Hoeneß’s charges were the better team in the first 45 minutes but failed to capitalise on the several chances they created, with Nick Woltemade hitting the post in the sixth minute. Leipzig showed them how it was done and took the lead through Xavi just two minutes later.

Undav levels

VfB responded by immediately increasing the tempo and were unfortunate not to equalise when Peter Gulacsi produced a spectacular save to thwart Deniz Undav. There was nothing the Leipzig goalkeeper could do in the 23rd minute, however, when Undav headed Stuttgart back into the game.

Twists and turns

Undav had another good opportunity just before the half-hour mark (28’), but Ridle Baku put Leipzig in front again on the stroke of half-time (44’) to give the home side a somewhat fortunate lead at the break.

Woltemade and Demirovic turn it around

Woltemade got his name on the scoresheet in the 57th minute with a header from a corner to deservedly pull VfB level. Ermedin Demirovic then took advantage of a Leipzig mistake, finishing off a pass from Undav to make it 3-2 and seal a well-earned away win.

Goals

8th minute: A brilliant goal from Xavi, who plays a one-two with Baku before scoring with a back-heel from inside the six-yard box.

23rd minute: VfB deservedly equalise! A lovely switch of play leaves Maximilian Mittelstädt with time and space to cross. It takes a slight deflection off Baku but Undav still gets there to head in from close range.

44th minute: David Raum feeds Xavi on the left and he curls a first-time shot towards goal. Alex Nübel palms it away but Baku is first to the rebound and taps in.

57th minute: Mittelstädt delivers a corner from the left and Woltemade rises highest to meet it, placing a header just inside the post.

78th minute: Lutsharel Geertruida misplaces a pass and VfB pounce immediately. Undav finds Demirovic, who finishes low into the left-hand corner from nine metres out.
