Tough defeat at home to Heidenheim

VfB Stuttgart were the better team against Heidenheim but couldn’t take their chances, eventually falling to a late 1-0 defeat.

Match summary

Sebastian Hoeneß’s side controlled proceedings from the get-go in front of a capacity crowd at the MHP Arena. Operating with a back five, Heidenheim sat deep inside their own half and restricted VfB to very few chances.

Demirovic goes close

Angelo Stiller teed up Ermedin Demirovic with a cushioned header after 13 minutes, but the striker sent his first-time effort wide of the target. Despite continuing to dominate, Stuttgart struggled to fashion clear-cut openings until the 31st minute, when Demirovic was sent racing clear by Deniz Undav’s fine pass before being denied by Heidenheim goalkeeper Kevin Müller. Undav then went close himself two minutes before the break, but there was no separating the teams at the interval.

Let-off for VfB, Müller saves Heidenheim

VfB were fortunate not to fall behind 11 minutes into the second half, when Jeff Chabot did well to divert Patrick Mainka’s header onto the crossbar. Müller then prevented the visitors from falling behind at the other end, producing an excellent save to tip Fabian Rieder’s free-kick over the crossbar.

Heidenheim triumph after VfB miss late chances

Substitute Nick Woltemade struck the crossbar from seven metres with 10 minutes of the game remaining, before Undav’s header struck the left-hand post only three minutes later. Heidenheim’s winner came in the final minute, Mathias Honsak sending a long-range effort into the net to earn the visitors a 1-0 win.

Goals

89th minute: Honsak’s shot from the edge of the box flies past goalkeeper Alexander Nübel and into the far corner.
